I was told by the manager at a sprint corporate store, that the evo is much better than the epic, and there have been more hardware issues and returns with the Epic. Thats why I chose EVO and really like it. Also the epic doesn't have a native way to sync with outlook... HTC phones do. That pushed me over the fence.
The issue that most people return for is GPS which is fixed with Froyo..if you look at the actual returns for issues that are software related and hardware related you would see Evo has more returns due to hardware issues..

As for outlook sync..it is kinda sad Sprint chose to not allow Samsung Kies(which offers outlook sync)...probably because they want to charge people extra for the APKs Samsung gives away for FREE...

you can sync Epic with outlook but gotta buy the software for it...called CompanionLink...you can also sync through gmail..
