Since you're on Sprint, try installing the SprintFixedProvisioning cab posted here:
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/1976754-post8469.html. I did so on my TP2 and immediately got 2-3 bars increase in reception. Good reception will usually mean your radio doesn't have to work too hard to talk to the cell towers and hence should improve your battery life. Worth a try.
