Another perspective. I went through the same dilemma regarding the EVO vs the Optimus. First, you are paying $200 + tax for a better phone, including the 4G capability. In ABQ, 4G isn't even on the schedule, so I did figure a worst case scenario of $240 + tax for a service I don't have access to. And in reality, I don't do that much downloading, streaming, browsing, etc., so I am not sure how much I would really benefit when 4G does arrive. That amounts to almost a $20/month saving including taxes over 2 years. Multiply that times 3 for the 3 lines/phones we have and we are talking a "free" tablet or 2 over the next couple of years. Needless to say I went the Optimus route and we were quite happy with it out of the box, and even happier after rooting, custom recovery, and putting my own custom ROM on it.

Finally, in regards to your original question about reception, I can tell you that we were somewhat originally disappointed in reception in our area compared to our old Diamonds. But with the latest PRL update issued a few days ago, reception has markedly improved from 1/2 bars to the 3/4 bars we are now getting, which is comparable to the Diamond.
