I just tried starting a new SMS via the +SMS button on the Messaging tab and you're right that it does take 5 seconds to open up. That's how it's always been on my ROMs. I guess I didn't know it could be faster. I'll look into this as well and see if there's a way to speed that up. Thanks!

@ Everyone,

Since you guys have far more experience with different ROMs than I do, is the speed at which my Messaging Tab opens up a new SMS from the new SMS button slow by comparison?
