So I now have an EVO. However, I am totally confused as to the process and versions of files I need to root and then load a new ROM on this awesome phone. I'll follow posts that link to other posts that then say something like 'outdated' then search my software version levels, and apparently my newer software levels are handled differently, or not ready yet. Can I take a few minutes of someones time that can give me sort of the 'end all be all' instructions to get my EVO rooted and running wireless tether (better battery life would be nice too). Thanks in advance.

first u need to know which hboot u have....your version could have either the old or new one.....depending on which hboot u have will depend which method of rooting u need to follow.
boot into bootloader to find hboot version....
-power down (hold power button)
-while holding down volume down, hit the power button
-keep holding volume down until bootloader screen appears
-hboot version is on the 2nd line from the top
