I think your missing how ad free works..its really nothing special..all they do is keep a list of domains that are known to host advertisements...and modify the Hosts file to set those domains to resolve to 127.0.0.1...this works on your pc as well...so it has no need to run in the background as a service..its just using the oldest trick in the book...
