HTC is using a different hardware that needs 3.30 to work properly.
3.30 will not be an OTA and comes stock on new evo's.

Custom roms already have access to 3.30 and it runs flawlessly on older evos.

Just root before you update it and flash something like UnrEVOked forever and you will never loose root.
Or root and flash a rooted version of 3.30.
I know unrEVOked will root up to 3.29. I am not sure about 3.30.
Flawlessly? Not so much.

I have a 0003 Evo purchased in July and the 3.30 OTA has been a nightmare to not only my battery life, but to my custom ROM.

I was the first person to make my Azrael ROM (on both here and XDA) go back to the 3.29 OTA and immediately myself and others had battery issues go away.

I would say it is less the 3.30.xxx.x ROMS and a lot more to do with the new kernels (HTC #10 and #17) since the kernel has a lot more influence on battery life than a ROM.

3.29 works better on older Evo's, but then people felt they were downgrading. Newer means better I guess.

I offset that problem a bit by including Netarchy's kernel. The problem with 3rd party kernels is greater chance it will not work or work well with every Evo. So it is a bandaid but does not fix the main problem.
