actually and one other thing, when i back up my phone using the cwm does it also back up app data? for example will it remember all the elements ive discovered in teh super addicting Alchemy game? or will i still need to use titanium backup?
The kernel is the central core of the operating system. For a painfully detailed description, click here: Kernel Definition
There are several custom kernels out there for Android 2.1. These change things like how fast the processor runs or how much voltage it eats up. These things specifically address speed, performance and battery life. Some ROMs have a custom kernel included, while other simply use the stock kernel. Other ROMs don't have a kernel included at all. With these you have to experiment with different kernels to see which gives you the best results.

As yet the source code for the Android 2.2 kernel has not been released, therefore there are no custom kernels for any Froyo ROMs yet. If you are looking to experiment and try different combinations, stick to the 2.1 ROMs.

As far as your data goes, yes Clockworkmod will back up all your user data. If you go back one page and read the post I left about how to flash ROMs with Clockwork you will see where it describes how to restore your user data after flashing a new ROM.

BTW that post is also in the wiki, so if you need to go back and read it again and can't remember where you saw it, look in the wiki.
