I think the stock AOSP browser actually has the ie6 user agent string built in maybe. Found some info where ppl had ported it off the N1 because of this function (or were just pointing out this function)

I think Calk may be the guy to hit up for this since he has been modding the HTC browser to behave more like the stock AOSP browser... maybe he will look into this for you (us) if you ask him. Found a little video showing some differences b/t the two, it doesn't show the user agent switch but, like I said, I did read the the stock 2.1 off the N1 had this option so I doubt they removed it from the AOSP 2.2 version.
