Here are some easy to understand instructions on how to use Clockworkmod Recovery to flash ROMs. This is about as user-friendly as it gets. I compiled this from several different threads where various people were explaining how to use Clockwork to flash ROMs, and I tried to re-write it in layman's terms and get rid of all the techie-speak so anyone could understand it. If there is anything here that you don't understand I would appreciate it if you would let me know and I will clarify it for you (and everyone else).

First, you'll need to be rooted and have Clockworkmod (CWM) custom recovery installed.

Turn off the phone and then hold volume-down, camera & power…. your phone will boot into the custom recovery.
Or if you want to go straight to the custom recovery console without powering off the phone first, hold down BOTH up and down volume, camera and power all at the same time and your phone will reboot right into CWM.

**NOTE** In stock recovery the text is blue and the button to execute a function is the home button. In CWM the text is green and the execute button is the camera button.

Go to backup/restore>backup>yes.

This will generate an 'image' if you will, of how your phone is right now on your SD card in the “clockworkmod” folder. The backup folders are labeled with the date/time of the backup so you can tell which one is your most recent backup just by looking at the folder name. Of course, you can rename them if you want.

Now you can use CWM to flash a custom ROM. To do this you must first wipe all data/cache info. In CWM do the following:

-wipe data/factory reset>yes
-repeat wipe data/factory reset 2 more times
-wipe cache partition>yes
-install zip from sdcard>choose zip from sdcard>(now navigate to where you saved your new custom ROM zip file and select it)>yes

If your new ROM also includes a new kernel, then you’re done. If you flashed a new ROM that doesn’t have a kernel your old kernel will remain. If you want to then flash a new kernel, wait for the new ROM to fully boot up, power off and boot into CWM, then flash the new kernel (exact same process as flashing the ROM, just choose the file with the kernel).

**IMPORTANT** Any time you flash a new kernel, whether its part of a custom ROM or just the kernel, you must recalibrate your battery. To do this, once the new kernel is flashed and it has booted up normally, power off, boot into CWM and do the following:

-advanced>Wipe Battery Stats>yes
-charge your battery up to 100%, let it run down all the way to 0%, and then leave it on and charge it all the way back up to 100%.

Your battery stats are now reset and you should get much better battery life.

So now you have a new ROM and you want all your user data back. Boot into CWM and do the following:

-backup and restore>Advanced Restore>(select the backup you wish to restore from)>Restore data>yes

This will restore all the hard work you did customizing your phone, as well as all your contacts, SMS and email messages, shortcuts and widgets (mostly), backgrounds, etc.
Now create a new backup of the ROM you just flashed.

Backups can be copied to your PC in case you lose/damage/brick your phone and have to replace it. When you get your new phone just root, install CWM and then do a full restore:

-backup and restore>Restore>(select the backup you wish to restore)>yes

This will restore everything, including the ROM and kernel. This method can also be used if you simply don’t like the new custom ROM you just flashed and you want to go back to what you had before.
