1. If you are looking to update the system software (aka Rom or Windows Mobile build) you are going to lose all your data, the best bet is to backup using PMbackup or something of the sort before updating.

2. I'd look on XDA for a rom or update for a iPaq. I have a older HX4700 and I got it updated to Windows Mobile 6.5 on there...
