The Android-Wifi-Tether uses Ad-Hoc connection..so your devices need to support that..as for USB tether..if your talking about the android-usb-tether? that one needs a modified kernel...

Things you can try:

Adding MobileAP (make sure to clockworkmod backup before trying)
See if the Froyo USB Tether works (I'm assuming your on froyo)
PDAnet (The free version though does not support HTTPS though)
