Well I went to unrevoked right away, the problem turned out that there were some files on the sd card that the phone was trying to boot off of. Would have been obvious to me if I was noobish at rooting android. So I wiped the card and started anew with no problems.

I eventually put two and two together and figured it out. I did not see any place on any guide that I read (hey I could have missed something) that mentioned it, so an easy one step root took me a couple of hours or so.
