You can play videos full screen.
The ideal rez for playing videos full-screen would probably be 240x240 because then you'll get to use the entire screen.
Umm... as for 16:9 or 4:3, I don't know. I would try 4:3 first.
To answer your first post:
WMV would probably be better
240x240 for full-screen viewing (the screen's res is 240x240)
I doubt that pWMP will read DivX, so I would encode in WM9
