Wifi / Battery question...

why is it that when I am connected to a network via wifi, my battery will last 3 to 4 x's longer than when wifi is turned off? When I am home, if I unplug my phone & go to sleep with wifi left on, my battery is barely drained, maybe 1 bar is gone. But when I turn off wifi, its usually 4 bars down when I wake up. Seems like when its just 2/3g on, it kills my battery, wifi somehow makes it last longer....
