The (wireless) switch, no matter the vendor (NORTEL, LUCENT, MOTOROLA) has a feature called MWT, Message Waiting Tone. Basically it does the same thing. Everytime you make an outbound call it will beep back at you before your call is connected to alert you of new, unplayed VM messages in your mailbox. I know we turned this feature on within our switch - so anyone with SPRINT, QWEST, Boost Mobile, Kajeet or Virgin will have this turned on.

This feature was originally created for the legacy 2G and analog handsets that really didnt have a very effective way to alert to the user. I know we have a come a long way since then, but this feature still is in exsitence.
