no..... the ROM of the phone never changes.... if it is a sprint phone/CDMA then you always have to flash a CDMA ROM. Even if you intend on SIM unlocking the phone and using it on a GSM network. unless you like making paperweights....
and SIM unlocking is what you had to do to make it work on the ATT network. Sprint ships their phones with access to US GSM towers unavailable, whereas Verizon doesn't, but they security lock the phones IIRC ( i dont pay attention to Verizon). To make your Sprint phone work on a GSM network in the US, you will need to spend the $30 bucks and SIM unlock your device, and you will need to upload a new radio to have it all work correctly. Once you do this you can buy an att phone, pop the sim out and put it in your phone and you are good to go once you set it to GSM mode.
I personally use TMo prepaid in case i need access to something and there is no cdma service available...
