Yes do a backup first just encase you don't like the ROM. I also backup data/app it has all your download/installed apps in it. My ROM has apps to backup SMS and bookmarks that you can use next time. Then yes install the update file. Those updates will be included next time I do a full upload. Also I would boot the phone up before installng the update. Don't do it all at once.
