The file didn't have any function at all, but it still kept the phone from booting up if it was unlocked.

These devices aren't like a normal computer, they don't have a library of generic drivers to fall back on, and they don't have a bunch of debugging stuff built in to the underlying OS. Space is limited, so if something doesn't come back right, it just stops and doesn't skip over it or anything, it just stops where it is, maybe restarts and tries again, but it's still fairly limited on what it will do.

Nearly all of the hardware is identical to the TP1 outside of the screen, try flashing a TP1 ROM to a TP2 device and it will get the same result as flashing a GSM TP2 ROM to a CDMA TP2 device.
Then, obviously, something is not identical in these phones hardware-wise, contrary to what this rep allegedly told the guy in Connecticut.
