If this is true, why can't you simply flash a GSM ROM to a CDMA phone and vice versa? Doing this will brick the phone. You can't because it has to do with hardware other than the antenna.

A GSM ROM won't brick a CDMA phone or the other way around. It will keep the phone from starting up and it won't pass the boot screen, but it doesn't brick the phone. Since that's the case, I'd say that it's at least close enough. I'd also guess that it's the driver for the phone chip that causes the phone from booting up. Flash the correct ROM and all is fine.
