I believe this has been posted in another thread but I'm not ambitious enough to look for it...

Each USB hub (internal to the computer) supports 1A max output. A dual-port connector splits this capacity (500mA max each) while a single-port allows the maximum output. This is why you can use a single-cable external DVD/HardDrive on some USB ports but on others you may need an extra USB cable for power (or use a power supply).
