Anything like that is usually caused by an errant app. I was having various freeze ups. Sometimes I would have to do a full power down and up. Not all app programmers manage memory very well and you could be running something that is lost in an infinite loop. If you can make it to the Applications service, try knocking down apps and see which one frees you up.
