I have tried to to do this for a while. The best way I have found so far is by going to gvmax.com and using their chat services to do it. Sign up for an account, and read the section in the user guide about group texts. It uses your google contact groups. Just make a group who you want to text and it will all work out, as long as their numbers are listed as mobiles.
