the "zimage" contains the build information, the newer ones have more code.
If you swapped out your current zimage with one from 2 weeks ago, you wouldn't have a charge indicator and you'd have constant SOD. So if you are experiencing certain issues, just get a newer/different zimage and it might work better for you, that way you don't have to go using a whole different ROM.
I am on FroyoStone with the zimage I attached a few posts back, and it works like a freaking dream
