Bluetooth battery usage

Is there any way to reduce the amount of battery life Bluetooth consumes when on but not being used?

When I first got the phone I kept everything off to maximize battery life. Then I started to see what I could leave on without consuming too much extra power. GPS always on - good, doesn't seem to consume battery when I'm not actually using it. WiFi always on - good so long as I turn off network notification.

Then I turned on Bluetooth, and it uses 25% of my battery even when nothing is paired to it. Is there any way to make it go to sleep when not in use or something? Or possibly turn off when the screen is off? I would like to keep it on so that I can just turn on my BT headset when I want to use it.

Of all the optional radios - GPS, WiFi, and BT - I expected BT to consume the least amount of battery. The guy at Best Buy even told me when I bought the phone that I should be able to leave BT on with little effect. But that's the opposite of what I'm seeing.
