Making stock Android home more Sense/info-centric

Currently running Froyo here and have never used Android before. It seems pretty decent, but I already miss the amount of information I get on the Sense homescreen, as well as the nice design.

On WM (with Cookie's hometab) I get all at a glance:
  • Time
  • Date
  • Weather
  • Alarms
  • Appointments (two or more)
  • Quicklinks (up to 5)
  • Unread text messages
  • Unread email

How can I do this on Android, without Sense? I've found Launcher Pro is a better/faster homescreen replacement but it doesn't seem to add much more.
