Install the following cab or it can be done via the registry..

change all the following values to "0".

HKCU/system/state/messages/MMS/unread
HKCU/system/state/messages/SMS/unread
HKCU/system/state/messages/TotalEmail/unread
HKCU/system/state/messages/VMail/total/unread
