1. Yup, wipe and flash. You may want to do a NAND backup first-its a COPY of the ROM image, not a settings backup.
2. New radio is flashed like a ROM without the wipe, just flash. No, 1.6 does not update the radio

Cant speak to 4G as it's not here yet. For Wifi try to uninstall/reinstall from the Market. That has worked before.
EDIT: Same question I posted below-I assumed you meant Wifi tethering? Is that it?
@ALL-after flashing 1.6 I got greedy and applied Calks Wimax update eventhoug I dont have 4G. Got greedy and paid for it
I LOST ROOT.
No biggie, just gotta redo but thought I'd warn y'all to proceed with caution as far as the Calk radio update goes. At least one other user had the same experience.
