*quick menu - screen close like the above poster said
*s2u2 with a low backlight off timer
*use htc audio manager instead of wmp. it natively supports song resuming while the phone is "off"
stock way
*wmp > options > buttons - choose a joystick button for toggle screen.
*lock the phone, then turn it off. sometimes it doesn't work, just repeat.
