This behavior is the same in the current June 19th 21905 and 23569 Dinik ROMs. I loaded up a June 11 23569 Sense 2.5 Cookie ROM and still had the same thing.
I loaded up the Verizon MR1 update ROM and wow, email just flew. Hmm, just a problem with the newer Energy builds? Sense 2.5?
Loaded up Energy.IMAGIO.23569.Sense2.1.Jun.19. This flew right along. So it isn't WinMo 6.5.5, is it Sense 2.5? Downloading Energy.IMAGIO.23569.Sense2.5.Reference.Jun.19 now and will check it out. If that is OK then about all that is left is Cookie as the culprit.
I'll update this post with the results.

this CAB to see if it helps any. NRG did acknowledge there were some latency issues with the June 19 ROMs and I had lots of problems with the 23569 Dinik ROM. After the CAB the speed improved. I did not test it with email though so not sure if it will have any effect.
