Light leakage is most noticeable in darkness; a white covering will not alleviate or conceal this problem. In addition, the front bezel looks to still be black so I am not sure this is a viable marketing strategy.
However I think that since the EVO is likely the first real threat to the iPhone campaign, it may be an option to "comfort" future iPhone-to-EVO switchers who preferred the white version.
Options... everyone likes options.
