Keyboards

Is it my screen or do all of the variations of keyboards make it nearly impossible to go back and accurately tap on the misspelled word. I've used the touch input, swype, and shapewriter and I find that if I have the wrong word chosen and want to edit it that when I tap on it it will show the cursor blinking on words further down the line and then I have to wrestle the device to get it to highlight the correct word. I've only come across one area for screen calibration and that was just on the keyboard settings for the touch keyboard where I had to type the quick brown fox thing. Does anyone know of a remedy?
