That is my main complaint against the gmail app, that it polls too frequently, thus eating the battery. Personally, I don't need to know the instant I receive an email, it's actually aggravating if notifications are turned on as email is constantly flowing in. It only takes a few seconds to download new email when the app opens.

The only advantage I've found with the gmail app is that it gives you full access to your entire gmail history, so searching six years of email is fast and easy. Whereas the exchange gmail only replicates a set history. One other minor benefit to the gmail app is that it is easier (fewer steps) to delete mail.
