Someone else had similar issue. He just got the update.zip and placed it on the root of the card. I attached a copy of my update.zip to this post.

Did it manually? Good, now you're practically a pro.
As long as you can get it done manually, you good to go because it can only get easier.

As far as your issue w/ the apps, what rom are you using?
I'm just using the stock .1 rom cause I don't wanna mess with the phone too much until I get a hang of dealing with Android. I just looked on my SD card and there is still no update.zip on it, so how in the hec did I manage to get through recovery & nandroid back up without it?? Im confused!
