they said it would ratchet down to 480p, but it's likely that it was a 1080i tv. since the hdmi was requesting 480 lines it switched to 480p. (also I've seen many hdtv's that don't have 720p only 480i, 480p, 1080i.)

I still want to know for sure what the hdmi out jack is. type-d or a?

also since it says hdmi 1.4 I wonder if tether would be possible..
