OK well we [almost] all have this problem... If you dont know what the problem is I'll explain: If the phone is on its back on a non-metallic surface, the touch does not register... Period. Touch the sides with one finger and press with another and it works.
And this actually goes back to HTC and further back to the Diamond1. The D1 had a leak problem that made it OVERLY hot... A teardown one day showed the problem... This is off of my head so sorry if i get the metal element wrong. The D1 had a copper (maybe aluminum) body casing causing the phone not to be properly grounded... When power cannot go into its sources' ground, it will then 'leak'. Copper, being a heat sync as it is then heats up (all around the phone) and kills battery... Now, the screen thing wasn't an issue, because it wasn't touch capacitive. So here are our friggin badass Evo's dieing for no reason... If you notice, while the phone is plugged in to USB you will not have this problem... The power has an outsource to ground with...
This is why our phones get hot... This is why our battery dies... Heat kills battery. Ever hear of the guy whos TP2 blew up in his backpack? Good times... Well... If you dont want to keep that defect and try again, do this...
TELL SPRINT! Make sure they understand entirely what you mean. This is what I said:

3:44:26 PM : Josue Rodriguez: *about
3:44:59 PM : Josue Rodriguez: Hello. I recently got the HTC Evo on launch date... I have noticed (as well as many others) that if I leave my phone flat on a non-grounded surface (styrofoam) the touch sensor does not work. I know it may sound a little silly... But it is an issue for me... I can't for example have the phone on its kickstand and unlock it.
3:45:15 PM : Maverick B.: Sure. I will be glad to solve your issues.
3:45:33 PM : Josue Rodriguez: I've heard from quite a few people the same happening... But if I am holding the phone, my hand acts as a ground and it works fine.
3:46:35 PM : Maverick B.: Ok.Let me check what can I do for you.
3:46:46 PM : Josue Rodriguez: And its not that I am touching too softly... Ive tried factory resets, took the screen protector off... It affects me most when I'm lying in bed, trying to browse the web, its a major pain to touch the bottom of my phone just to scroll
3:47:58 PM : Maverick B.: I am just checking about it. Please stay connected.
3:48:20 PM : Josue Rodriguez: Thanks so much, Mav
3:49:03 PM : Maverick B.: You're welcome.

UPDATE
... ITS NOT JUST THE TOP OF THE SCREEN... If you are experiencing this problem... Open up Spare Parts... And put it in landscape... now you will see the problem still applies to the notification bar... I assure it is not the notification bar tho... The edges of the whole screen, in any orientation... I have a video in another thread showing the problem ... lemme find it... though i did not doing sideways, if you do it you will see it too...
this only applies to those who actually have the ground problem
