I should have edited my post. I know it's been discussed numerous times on the forum. The fix on Sam's post didn't work (probably because the FixUnreadCount.zip file didn't cover MMS), but what did work was a version of the regedit that was posted by boredandtattoed (and thanked) on another thread:

The regedit, to quote her, was "hkcu\system\state\messages\sms\unread should say 1 on count, change to 0 and reset." Mine was already at 0, so I looked at MMS directory and found that it was set to 1. I changed it to 0, and the unread count went away.
