I've had similar things happen every time I've ever switched phones on Sprint. One of my old flip phones kept receiving texts and voicemail notifications for over a year.

When I went from my Mogul to a TP2 I still received texts, emails and voicemail notifications for 3 months. I finally gave it to my roommate when her hairspray leaked in her purse, destroying her blackberry. If it had stayed unactivated I'm sure it would still be getting them. I never had a usable data connection though, email would push but couldn't navigate anything without wifi.
