The guide says to disable the keep aspect ratio setting. I have no idea why, but that's what causes all the stretching BS. My suggestion is to always keep the aspect ratio and set the max width to 800 or whatever your videos width is (whichever is smaller). The video may not fully cover the screen, but you'll only end up with minimal black bars and you'll make better use of the Evo. I think a 16:9 video converts to 800x448 when keeping the aspect ratio.
I haven't ordered my HDMI cable for video output yet, but you can indeed keep the video at 1280x720 and it'll playback fine on the Evo. I would assume this would make for optimal video output, but it comes at a cost of roughly 1GB/hr.
For those wondering the video that handbrake outputs is typically h.264 video with aac audio in an m4v container.

I'm not sure what you think he would need Froyo 2.2 for. He is trying to take files from his DVR to his phone. This is fully supported on at least 1.5 up and probably even 1.0 via the mass storage option. The benefit that 2.2 brings is the ability to install applications to the memory card. Currently we are restricted to using built in storage only for applications.
