I can't speak for all water-applied protectors, but the ones I use are awesome. Like another poster mentioned, you only use a small amount of water, and applying, positioning, and removing air bubbles are amazingly simple & exact.
I remove the battery & apply tape over the water-detector tape (Use a strong tape like packing tape cut to size & applied carefully so as NOT to touch the water-detector surface.) I can apply a screen protector in about 15 seconds perfectly this way. You just have to be patient for it to set up, which only takes about 30 minutes.
