Question though, if I get the usb to work (so it can charge as well), will it play the streaming web (like pandora or slacker) and will I be able to answer the calls through the car like with the aux in? or is it going to consider the phone just an ext. drive?

Most likely your pioneer will just see it as ext drive with the head unit reading files from TP2. . Which probably gives better sound quality than going thr aux or even BT. you wonn't be able to make phone call with pioneer thr usb.
I have a pioneer DEH-P7000BT. It's a few yr old but got just about every options of connectivity (2 aux, usb, bt. No wifi but I am sure pioneer working on that
). The music quality is better over BT compared to aux as the volume is streamed at a higher level to the unit so you don't have to crank up the volume in either the phone or the stereo and introduces more distortion.
I also got one of those 1 gb thumb drive (which i got for free at trade show) and just leave it connected to the pioneer in my car... Letting the pioneer does the decoding of mp3 actually give best quality
