When you pre-order at both BB and RS, you pay your $50 deposit and they give you a $50 gift card to offset the deposit. When you go back to pick it up, you cash in the gift card and pay the difference. The reason they give you the gift card to offset the deposit is just in case they can't honor the pre-order or you decide to buy the phone somewhere else. That way you're not out the $50 you paid them.
