Well, if I go to a regular plan and give up SERO, I should qualify for the yearly upgrade perk. Yes, it does require you to keep re-upping your contract, but it's still a significant benefit for those that like to upgrade frequently (as long as you think Sprint will continue to offer a good phone lineup). So that should be in the math somewhere too. Basically, at the end of every year, you have the choice of:
1. Staying with what you have for another year at no cost.
2. Upgrading to something new from Sprint at the new customer price.
3. Paying the pro-rated fee ($120 @ 12 months) to leave early and get another carrier's new customer price. For most smart phones, that $120 is still less than the discount you got for the contract, so if you want another carrier's phone badly enough, that's a fair price to pay.
