If you'd like to fix without installing a cab it can be done via the registry change all the following values to "0".
HKCU/system/state/messages/MMS/unread
HKCU/system/state/messages/SMS/unread
HKCU/system/state/messages/TotalEmail/unread
HKCU/system/state/messages/VMail/total/unread
