Once in contacts, click the magnifying glass on the bottom of the screen and just type a few letters. Walla, your contact!
I came from the Touch Pro 2 and liked that feature also, however, with every new phone/platform comes things to get used to. Some features we're used to are replaced with other features. Some new features come with the new device/platform. It's a process of change. You get used to it.
I did lke that feature too though....
