It's not impossible at all. They can easily push over the air updates that work in the background to enable or disable the hardware on the device.
technically i guess they could send out an ota everytime they disabled it or enabled it, but honestly man $110 for the cheapest plan to use wifi, i doubt sprint is that stupid.
