I've had intermittent corruption with numerous cards, and I never use a USB cable.
No applications installed to the SD, only TomTom maps. Nothing in email (or anywhere else) that accesses the card. Soft reset after every use of TomTom (which does access the card), and although rare, I still get corruption once in a great while....
