I read somewhere once that if your RUU is erroring out after connecting to the PC through USB, do the following:

- Connect like you always do
- Run the RUU
- Unplug the phone from USB while the RUU is "searching for it" then plug it back in
- Success

I don't remember the steps in detail or exactly when to unplug the phone and plug it back in, but I remember having to do it a few times and it worked each time. Give it a shot.
