Well they couldn't get past the first screen until they turned the WiFi on...

So your plan was absolutely compatible, you just had to get on the internet in order to sign into Google (and paying for an unlimited data plan isn't the only way to do that, but it will certainly work).

That is not the same thing at all as Sprint reps telling customers the unlimited data they have been paying for on their Windows Mobile phone won't work on their Hero or Pre, and requiring an upgrade before they will even activate the phone.
