I was having this same issue with my Sprint TP2 freezing for 1 to 2 minutes after viewing or sending text messages. All I did was create a folder called "hold sms/mms" and then moved all of the messages from my SMS/MMS inbox that were over 1K in size to it. These were mainly my received MMS messages that had pictures attached. After I did the move, the delay disappeared. I did NOT have to switch to classic view or delete any sms/mms messages at all! The key is don't keep large messages in your sms/mms inbox.
